Rob and I went to see Grandma in Huntsville Alabama. We wanted to see her in November because she will be 101 on the 20th. It was so sweet to spend time with her. She makes us laugh ALL the time. She has a funny bone that is catching.
She talked to Rebecca on the phone (her great great granddaughter). She was impressed that Rebecca could say "Love you Grandma". Then we went to our hotel and got the laptop going so she could "see" her other great great granddaughter Ellie. She loved talking to Sean, Kate and Ellie but I think she really enjoyed seeing Ellie!
Last year when Grandma turned 100 we all asked her what invention in her life time had the biggest impact on her. It was funny to hear "zipper". She explained that before the zipper invention EVERYTHING had to be buttoned. She didn't like the time and trouble it took to get dressed and even put on shoes. Everything seemed to have buttons!
Grandma was so impressed with Skype. Being able to see and talk to people on the computer was amazing. The look on her face and joy she felt to actually see Ellie was priceless. It was a look of plain wonder and joy. Maybe SKYPE will be her new favorite invention in the last 101 years???
She talked the rest of the day about Rebecca talking so clearly and Ellie crawling. We are blessed to be able to go see her. It's quite amazing how many people love her and want the best for her. She is truly special. Her nieces and nephews are there for her. I think they love her like they do their own mother.
While we were there we took her to the Jack Daniels "brewery". She had to walk up a total of 125 steps, and she did it! All on the tour were shocked at her agility to maneuver up and down those steps. Rob did stand with her for support, but she walked them herself.
The next morning when we went to pick her up for breakfast, her poor knee and hip were feeling the previous days adventure. We felt bad and she said she'd just have to exercise on steps more so she wouldn't be sore!! What a lady!!!!
We also took her to a little grass strip airport (Rob wanted to see it).Her nephew Ted had taken her there before, to try and get someone there to give her a short flight. It didn't work out last year but while we were there the same gentleman (I think his name is Mr. King) walked in. He was willing to take her up but the weather wasn't very good. Ted will be briging her back I'm sure.
We also had a nice visit with Ted (grandmas nephew). He does a lot for Grandma and so does his sister Rosie.
Our time with Grandma was so short but I hope we can get her here for a visit. That would be a truly wonderful thing....
